For your consideration: one USGI 4 piece Modular Sleep System complete with a Gore Tex Bivy made in the USA by Tennier industries under contract to supply the United States military. This is the most rugged and versatile sleeping bag available; able to adapt to any temperature or weather condition you’re likely to encounter. This fellas review of the sleeping bag for winter camping: I wish I had this sleep system when I was in the military. (MSS) is a modular sleeping bag. Used by the United States armed forces. The MSS consists of a camouflaged, waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex. Bivy cover, a lightweight patrol sleeping bag, and an intermediate cold weather sleeping bag. Compression sacks are included to store and carry the system. The MSS is available in colors compatible with the universal camouflage pattern. The patrol bag provides cold weather protection from 35 to 50 °F (0 to 10 °C). The intermediate bag provides cold weather protection from -5 to 35 °F (-20 to 0 °C). Together, the patrol bag and intermediate bags provide extreme cold weather protection in temperatures as low as -30 °F (-35 °C). The bivy cover can be used with each of three MSS configurations (patrol, intermediate, or combined) to be comparable with the environment in which the system is being used; the bivy cover provides environmental protection from wind and water. Sleeping bags are made of ripstop nylon fabrics and continuous filament polyester insulation; camouflage bivy cover is made with waterproof, breathable, coated or laminated nylon fabric called Gore-Tex; the compression sacks are made with water-resistant, durable nylon fabric. Reversible double-pull (opens end to end) slider allows top or bottom ventilation. Non-locking slide fastener self repairs if jammed or snagged. Draft flap prevents heat loss. Hood adjusts for heat retention; includes nylon drawcord and barrel lock. Sewn insulation does not migrate in the bag. Anatomically designed foot box contains twice the insulation as the bag. Sewn-in, quilted chest collar prevents air drafts up and down through the hood. When combined with Patrol and ICW bags, the system is rated to climates -20 and to -50° with proper clothing. Approved by all departments and agencies of the Department of Defense. Includes snap fastener and slide fastener. Reinforcement webbing is sewn around the circumference of the bag. Nylon drawcord closure with a barrel lock Measures 19.5-23.5 in length, Just over 10 in diameter. With proper ECWCS clothing layers, this system can keep you comfortable in temperatures from 50 to -50! The entire system is under 11 pounds and can be compressed into one cubic foot inside of the stuff sack. The bivy (outer) cover is wind and water resistant and is often used in place of a tent when situations require it. This system is perfect for survival situations, extreme campers and hikers as well as recreational scouting and family camping trips. The MSS sleeping bags and other components are constructed to be used in conjunction with each other, or separately to complete an interoperable system known as the extreme cold weather sleeping bag. The MSS is designed to provide comfort in temperatures ranging from 50°F to -50°F when wearing various layers of extreme cold weather clothing. The Water proof Bivy Cover is produced utilizing waterproof, moisture-vapor-permeable material with all seams heat sealed. The Compression Stuff Sack is constructed with water resistant materials with adequate volume for both bags as well as the Bivy cover. This unique sack compresses the system to one cubit foot. According to my kitchen scale these are the weights: Patrol Bag 2lb 4oz Black Bag 4lb Bivy Bag 2lb 4oz Stuff Sack 12oz For a total of 9lb 4oz. It’s more expensive. 2.5 – 3 times as expensive.
