The Western Mountaineering Highlite is part of the the ExtremeLite series of sleeping bags. It is the ideal choice if you are looking for a down-filled sleeping bag that is as lightweight and compressible as possible. The Highlite weighs just 455g and will pack away into a 15 x 30cm stuff sack. It is rated to 2°C (35°F). Western Mountaineering have achieved these impressive figures by using a Sewn-Thru & Baffled Box Construction. A box-type construction involves dividing the down fill into separate pockets as shown in the diagram below. This type of construction can be a compromise in certain situations because the down insulation cannot be effective at the seams. However, the Western Mountaineering Highlite has baffled vertical seams. This means that 1.5 inch netting separates the inner and outer seams to ensure that the full insulating power of the 850+ goose down is realised. Western Mountaineering have used their ExtremeLite shell fabric, which strikes a perfect balance between weight and durability. By combining this with a very efficient cut (ensuring the Highlite contains no unnecessary fabric) a total fabric weight of just 230g is achieved. Original owner and only used twice on two summer trips with liner. Looking over the entire bag I see no rips, tears, or stains. Bag lofts to the full 5.5. Everything in the HighLite’s design is intended to reduce weight and promote compressibility. Shell fabric goes without saying. No other shell fabric is this light or packed with so many threads per inch. Bag uses a one way #4 1/2 YKK coil zipper that is cut to half length. Western Mountaineering Highlite 850+ goose down 6’6″ 35 degree left zipper 3.5″ loft. 9 oz fill weight. It still looks brand new and functions flawlessly. It was never abused as I would unpack it when setting up camp, sleep in it (always clothed) and then pack it back up in the morning. It has always been stored at home in the digicam bag allowing for maximum loft maintenance. The bag does not harbor any odors and comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home. I baby my gear and hope to pass on some savings to another ultralight backpacker. The scale pic is on a basic kitchen food scale and the approx 18 oz weight includes the bag stuffed into WM stuff sack. My initials are DM and appear on the bag label as a family member had the same exact sleeping bag on backpacking trips.
