Intermediate and patrol bags. Patrol bag has minor repair that no one could ever accuse me of attempting to hide (jenga block for scale). Exceedingly poor luck that I put a small tear in it the only time I used it. Intermediate bag was never used and in excellent condition. Both bags have been properly stored in large mesh laundry bags to keep the insulation lofty and effective.

The Modular Sleep System (MSS) is a bag-within-a-bag style sleeping bag system, developed in 1997 for the United States Army. The MSS consists of a camouflaged, waterproof, breathable Bivy Cover. A lightweight Patrol Sleeping Bag. And an Intermediate Cold Weather Sleeping Bag. A Compression Stuff Sack. Is included to store and carry the system. The patrol bag provides cold weather protection from 35 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The intermediate bag provides cold weather protection from minus 5 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Together, the patrol bag and intermediate bags provide extreme cold weather protection in temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The bivy cover provides environmental protection from wind and water. Sleeping bags are made of ripstop nylon fabrics and continuous filament polyester insulation; camouflage bivy cover is made with waterproof, breathable, coated or laminated nylon fabric; the compression sacks are made with water-resistant, durable nylon fabric. The MSS components can be combined in different configurations to match the environment and temperature needed. Each component has double sided snaps down both sides of the zipper that securely attach each component to the other. These snaps essentially allow two or three components attached together to function as a single sleeping bag.

Over the years, different government contractors have produced these items under different NSN numbers. Rest assured these are all the exact same product, they just have different part numbers. The Improved Modular Sleep System (IMSS) Intermediate Sleeping Bag is the perfect sleeping bag for scouting, camping, or just being prepared. This heavyweight, durable, mummy style sleeping bag is ideal for cold to freezing weather. The bags snap together making a system that will keep you warm when the temperature drops below -10°F. The Intermediate Bag alone is heavy weight bag and excellent for use during cold weather. The durable rip-stop nylon shell and continuous filament polyester insulation is constructed to withstand the rigors of combat. The mummy design helps keep you warm and the generous “boot box” at the bottom is designed to allow the user to keep his or her boots on, either for added warmth or in case a quick exit is needed. Durable YKK zippers are used on either end of the bag allowing wearers to customize the amount of ventilation. Zippers are dual sided and can be easily accessed from the inside. Free from cold spots.
