HOLUBAR (Boulder, CO) Rare Basecamp Ultimate Double Expedition -40 Goose Down Sleeping Bag. Uncleaned as found with no smells, rips, holes or tears. Does have 5 small clear nylon gear-aid repair patches averaging the size of a dime and a quarter located on the top front side in various places and not all that noticeable that could be sewn if desired. Zippers both work great. Comes with a larger thin blue carry bag. About 7 of loft and weighs 9 lbs. 72″ in length to the neckline and tip to tip at 95″ and 45 wide. Very collectible rare bag from the early 70′s USA made which you might not see again. Some internal baffles could be damaged due to age. I didn’t see much of any dirt or stain markings and in general great shape for the age with lots of life left good for the collection or use. This is stored in a loose fashion as all sleeping bags and tents should. Pre-owned and vintage items will have wear and signs of age. Please view the pictures closely and use photos for condition and description. Please DON’T ASSUME something comes with it. They have always been stored loosely in large cotton storage sacks, in the dry, high desert climate where they were made. The down is light an fluffy, the loft is incredible, the Nylon is undamaged, and the Zippers will last forever. They were made from the very finest Canadian Goose Down that could be obtained, andade by hand 40 miles north of where I live now. Absolutely irreplaceable in this condition. I have taken extraordinary care of it since new and it is in outstanding condition with no decline in performance over the years. For the past 20 years, I have only used it twice. Before that, I only used it about half a dozen times, laundering the snap/tie-in liner after each use and storing it properly in a very large, breathable cotton storage bag, always in climate controlled conditions. I have never been cold in it, in any weather. This is the 6′-2 model, rated at 0°F and weighing 4lbs. (see the catalog description and specs in the last photo). The top collar and draft tube behind the zipper allow you to seal the bag and prevent cold air seeping in. All Holubar products were made in Boulder, Colorado by real American seamstresses from the best materials available, including prime northern goose down and YKK zippers. As with everything this small artisan company made, the craftsmanship is remarkable. Many outdoor enthusiasts agree that Holubar made the best equipment available throughout the life of the company, especially under Jim Kack’s direction from 1968 until 1981 when The North Face bought out the company to stifle the competition. This is a beautiful and fully functional piece of classic outdoor gear that still gives like new performance. Vintage Rare HOLUBAR Royalight 4 Season Expedition Mountaineering -20 F Premium Goose Down Sleeping Bag made in the USA as shown in the pictures and in excellent overall used condition with no smells, rips, holes, tears or repairs. This is nice but the care tag has been removed. This is uncleaned and has a couple very light minor dirt/stain markings which look as if they can be washed out since this is an unwashed item as found. After washed this bag could easily qualify to be then in near mint condition which doesn’t look as if it was used much at all. YKK zipper works great along with all the cinch cords. No carry bag was found or included. This has about 9″ of loft and very thick & fluffy but yet lightweight and weighs only 5 lbs & measures about 72″ in length from the bottom of the bag to the head area. From the bottom of the bag to the very end of the pillow stretched out it measures about 80″ in length and the center measures around 25″ wide and the top portion around 30 wide. Stitching is all good and tight, cording looks still new and clean along with the little leather patches attached and in general an amazing bag of exceptional quality and condition for the age. This has snaps for a liner but no liner included. SLEEPING BAG TEMPERATURE RATINGS AND SLEEPING BAG LOFT — The scoop on Sleeping Bag temperature ratings, the best method for an average consumer without expensive testing lab equipment is to lay out the subject sleeping bag for several days to become fully fluffed-out. Then take a normal 12 inch ruler and gently shove it up against the side of the bag, about where your ribs are. Carefully sight a level line, most likely you’ll see a reading of somewhere around 5 to 8 inches. 5 inches would be good to about 25 degrees for an average sleeper, assuming the bag doesn’t have any broken internal baffles with big cold spots resulting. 6 inches good to about 15 7 inches good to about 5 8 inches good to about 10 below. Shown below: the ruby red bag is a 1972 Snowline bag with 7.4 inches of loft, vs. A blue 1965 Holubar Expedition Royalight bag with 9.3 inches of loft. “Snowline” was the original name chosen by the founder of Snowlion, but lasted only briefly due to conflict with the prior users of the name (Eddie Bauer).
