When you need a reliable Winter/Alpine sleeping bag, it’s not advisable to skimp on quality. Enter: The Western Mountaineering Puma MF. If you have been researching high end sleeping bags, you’ve probably come across Western Mountaineering as one of a very few companies recognized as the pinnacle of their craft. For starters, all their bags are handmade in the US and always have been. Although their bags come in a few different shell materials, their MicroFiber(MF) is the best all around. It’s super breathable to allow your vapor to escape at night but still remains highly water resistant to effectively deal with condensation. All of their bags are also filled with the highest quality down available, for maximum loft, compression and longevity. The Puma MF is the 2nd warmest bag they make and rated at -25. This is the 6′ model and weighs in at a scant 3lbs 7oz. This bag has been used literally 4 or 5 nights and is in immaculate condition. If I still had the tags, I could easily sell it as brand new. It’s always been stored by hanging it in a closet, so the down has never been compressed except for the couple of weekends I’ve gone Winter camping. Take a look at the Western Mountaineering website for even more details. Then do yourself a favor and try and find a legitimate bad review for this bag. How does EN testing differ from other methods and is it better? When Marmot first started testing bags, especially when we used Gore-Tex. Fabric, our designers would go into meat lockers and sleep over night. Once they were able to sleep through the night they looked at the amount of fill to determine the temp range. Nowadays it is a bit more scientific. The testing method used in the US is very similar to the EN test. They use a copper mannequin, but the clothing, pad, and math formula are different. Again we feel the EN test is the most reliable and accurate measure of the performance of a sleeping bag currently available. Has the feedback from the EN testing improved the designs of Marmot bags? The vast majority of our bags have tested to our current temp ratings. In another instance, there was a spot that showed room for improvement which led to more efficient baffle construction. With our baseline testing started in 2004, we can now measure improvement over time through new fabrics, insulation, and construction techniques. Will the EN test become an industry wide standard? Currently our industry can’t agree on how the testing should be done because of all the variables. The European government has stepped in and taken control of standardized testing.
